So what type of tackle do you need to cater for such big fish?

Well, first the good news, your guide (assuming you've enlisted the help of a 'pro') will supply everything you need, so no need to trek half way round the world with a load of gear in tow!

Rods are 1 piece 14ft Purglass beachcasters, with the reel fitting at the bottom of the butt. I must find out why that is...... I'd imagine it's to do with the casting on big baits and leads and the leverage required to do this. The first few times you use this set up you will feel uncomfortable but over a few sessions it soon becomes second nature.

Daiwa SL50SH

Reels are different for the bait fish and the Bronzies, as you would expect the bait fish don't have the same power as a big bronzie and you can get away with a lighter set up for these.

Daiwa SL50SH's are the order of the day for the bait fish, loaded with 350-400 yards of 18kg line - this is the same breaking strain as that used for Bronzies since you can never be sure quite what you are going to hook!

Daiwa Sealine 400H

For the Bronzies something more substancial is required and my guide currently uses Daiwa Sealine 400H's, these are a medium sized trolling reel which he adapts to improve casting ability.

They hold upwards of 450 yards of 18kg line and have excellent clutch systems which are so essential when you are playing a Bronzie for a long time.

End tackle usually consists of an 8oz lead, rigged on a simple paternoster system coupled with 2 7/0 or 9/0 hooks (depending on what you are fishing for) and either a nylon or wire trace.
